Chapter Seven

Viola ducked behind a tree near the impressive, three-story mansion owned by Derek Chandler. Her feet were wet, and she was cold. The snowmobile ride had been as bumpy and unpleasant as it had been wet, thanks to snow dripping off tree limbs and spraying up when she hit the bumps a little too hard. The path hadn’t been difficult to follow, thanks to the map, but it had been a hard ride. Luckily, she’d seen the cars when she was still quite a way off, and thought to park the snowmobile so she could walk the last few hundred feet and try to stay out of sight.

She’d glimpsed an awful lot of people outside, too. Who would be having an event even partially outdoors with this much snow on the ground?

Something told her that she didn’t want to be noticed until she was ready to knock on the door and ask for an interview. The same sense that perked her ears when she thought something would be a good story was tickling at her now, but in a different way. Things just felt…wrong.

It took a while, but she finally found a way to get onto the property without having to pass anyone. The front gates didn’t enclose the grounds completely—a stretch in the back that emptied into the woods gave her access. As she snuck closer to the house itself but stayed hidden in a small bank of trees near the back edge of the yard, she got a better view of the expensive cars parked all around the property. They’d clearly driven up there before the bad snowfall.

Viola cursed the cold weather that made hiding outside and spying so miserable.

And then a naked man ran out of the mansion.

Followed by another, with a naked woman close on his heels.

And then a tiger dashed out the door, chasing all of them.

A goddamn tiger.

Sex slaves and exotic animals?

It can’t be true.

She flinched when a tiger growled from somewhere she couldn’t see. When she found the source of it, she closed her eyes for a moment, sure she must have either hit her head in the crash, or knocked herself unconscious on the snowmobile and was dreaming.

People were pouring outside and sort of falling together in the snow.

Having sex.

That animal sound was coming from a woman on all fours, with a man kneeling behind her, pounding into her.

What kind of kinky things was Derek Chandler into?

Viola had to remember to stay hidden. She almost forgot herself, because it was hard not to stare and gape. People had sex in every position imaginable, though not all were doing so. Some milled about. A few even had clothes on. And one man had a sweater on that looked kind of patterned off tiger fur.

Wait, that wasn’t a sweater. Was he tattooed? He—he dropped to all fours and the color spread to his…and then his hair changed, and his face…

Viola gasped and pushed off the tree, landing on her ass in the snow.

“What the fuck?” she whispered.
